PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

BEHAVIOUR FOCUS
Use Good Manners - Good Manners are something we should use every day to make ourselves and others feel good. Being polite and courteous means considering how others are feeling.

MIND UP FOCUS
Mindful Smelling - Mindful Smelling is being aware of when your sense of smell is being activated and how it impacts on you.

Dear Families and Friends,

The learning that is taking place at Petrie Terrace is amazing! As I work in classrooms it is incredible to not only see high levels of student work but the engagement of learning taking place throughout the school is inspiring. From the Prep rooms where children are reading and writing daily, through to Year 6 students engaged in research projects, I am truly impressed.

BEFORE SCHOOL ROUTINE
A vital part of Positive Behaviour for Learning is maintaining a safe environment for students, staff and parents/carers. I would like to remind you that Teachers and Administration staff are rostered for duty from 8.50am – 3pm only. You may observe staff on school premises but this is a time for planning and preparation. They are not required to provide active supervision prior/after these times. The school does provide Teacher Aide supervision from 8:30am and all students are welcome to arrive at school from this time.
Please ensure that your child/children do not arrive at school prior to 8:30am as the school does not provide supervision. It is a criminal offence for a person who has care of a child less than 12 years of age, to leave the child for an unreasonable time without making reasonable provision for the supervision and care of the child. We ask that students not arrive at school until after 8.30am.  If you require your child to be at school prior to 8.30am, before school care is available. Jabiru is able to provide this service here within the school grounds. Thank you in advance for helping to keep all PTSS students safe!

STRONG BEHAVIOUR AND MINDUP FOCUS
This month has seen our leaders provide a strong focus on our student learning behaviours at assembly and also within our Peer Support groups. The positive change in student behaviour has been a great success, evidenced by the decrease in off task student learning behaviour and the decrease in students being sent to the mindful thinking space. It’s great to be a bucket filling school!!

USE MANNERS
This is a behaviour rule about Respect for Self and Others
WHY?
• Good Manners are something we should use every day to make ourselves and others feel good. Being polite and courteous means considering how others are feeling.
HOW?
• You can practice good manners and being polite by saying ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’.
• Waiting for a turn to speak and not interrupting.
• Using someone’s name when you want to speak to them, or just say ‘hello’.
• You could hold a door or a gate open for someone or let them enter before you.

CONCLUSION
Think of other ways to be polite and use good manners during the day at school and at home.
It will make you and others around you feel good too.
It makes our place calm and happy to be in when everyone’s feelings are respected and cared about.

MINDFUL SMELLING
WHAT IS IT?
Mindful Smelling is being aware of when your sense of smell is being activated and how it impacts on you.
HOW?
You may notice the smells around you of books or paper, food or the garden.
Do these smells make you feel a certain way?
Sometimes smells can alert us to danger like chemicals or fire.
Sometimes a smell can make us feel calm or happy.
Sometimes a smell can trigger a memory from the past about a person or place.
Be aware of the smells around you like the smell of your lunch or the rain.

CONCLUSION
Try to notice the smells around you this week and you can ask others if they can smell them too. Are they the same for you and your friends?
How many things can you smell today?

REPORT CARDS
This semester the report cards will demonstrate the work that each student has been participating in for each learning area. They will receive a grade for each student’s achievement in relation to their knowledge, understanding and application.  Each student will have a comprehensive comment on their learning and general behaviour.

LEARNING IS FUN
This week students have loved working with the kindness crew at break times. The kindess crew help support students working through friendship fires in a fun and engaging way. Our leadership students this year will continue this work at break times and also in Peer Support Lessons.

WE HAVE A NOTICEBOARD
Thank you to the Osborne family for the lovely surprise donation to the school of a new notice board to use for all our school and P&C notices. It will be placed near the library in the coming weeks for us to be able to share and help build the communication that we are looking for as a school community.

MOVIE NIGHT
I am very grateful for our school community and would like to say a huge thank you in advance to all that have made the movie night possible. As it’s our first movie night event for our school it is with much anticipation I would like to make sure everyone that joins in the fun has a great evening. Please bring comfortable seating such as a bean bag or blankets. As the weather has really cooled off some lovely snuggly blankets will be needed as well.  The toilets at the hall will be open to use and food stalls on the oval if you need a snack. The school and P&C would appreciate your help in guiding all that join us on the night to engage with the movie for everyone’s comfort. Parents and caregivers have the responsibility to monitor their own child/children’s behaviour.
Hopefully you have the night marked on your calendar and we will see you tonight after 5pm.

Enjoy your week,
Sandy
