At Petrie Terrace we believe that children are artists and should be given opportunities to develop their arts practice from a young age. This involves ensuring students explore a wide range of materials and experiment with different techniques. Units of work are open ended and inquiry based, giving the children opportunities to use their own ideas, experiences and opinions in the making of their work. For example, students will explore a theme and learn and practice supporting techniques and then create individual responses to the task.
We have a kiln on site to support our ceramics units of work. Children delight in the manipulation of clay and the process of firing and glazing. All students from Prep to Year 6 attend weekly Visual Arts classes run by a specialist art teacher in a designated art room. Here, the children explore printmaking, painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, art theory, mixed media and photography.
Petrie Terrace SS holds a biennial Art Show that celebrates the work of all children in a highly curated and carefully presented exhibition.
Students also study media arts and drama with their classroom teacher.
Petrie Terrace SS has a longstanding partnership with the 'Footsteps' dance program and lessons, all leading up to the school annual dance and celebration concert.
